Masked Storytelling with Zarco Guerrero!
Saturday
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Join Zarco and his unique masked characters as they celebrate Día de los Muertos through hilarious and moving storytelling!
Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a significant holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Southwest. It is a day when homage is paid with prayers, offerings of food and the building of altars to those who have gone before us.
Presented in partnership with the Arizona State Museum, multi-talented maskmaker and performer Zarco Guerrero will bring a Día de Los Muertos celebration to UAMA! Among the colorful characters making appearances are: the poetry spouting “El Vato Poeta,” the flirtatious “La Comadre,” the wise “El Abuelito,” and other beloved roles that Zarco, a prolific playwright, has created to express the humor and sadness of our lives.
This performance marks the opening day of UAMA's Staged: The Art of Performance exhibition. Visitors can enjoy an all-day art-making station as well as tasty bites from Drew's Dogs food truck (12:00-4:00 p.m.). You can also venture across the street to the Center for Creative Photography's Community Day for activities and performances inspired by their latest exhibition, Animality: 100 Years of Photographs.
This event is presented in partnership with the Arizona State Museum.
